Two ship crew members died Monday morning in a Houston fire, Port Houston confirmed in a Facebook post Monday.
A person contacted the Port Houston Fire Department about a fire aboard a ship docked at the Barbours Cut Container Terminal just before 10 a.m. Monday, the department said.
Two ship crew members died and another person was hurt and taken to the hospital via helicopter.
“The fire is extinguished, and there is no threat to the surrounding community,” Port Houston posted online at 10:49 a.m. “However, the Port Houston Fire Department will monitor the vessel for at least 24 hours.”
According to the fire department, the Harris County Fire Marshall and medical examiners were at the scene conducting investigations. Baytown and LaPorte Fire Departments also helped.
According to Port Houston, the fire happened aboard the M/V Stride.
The container ship was built in 1997 and is flying under the Panama flag, according to VesselFinder.
